Rethinking Small Urban Spaces — Design Talk Vol. 1 at BaanLaeSuan Fair Midyear 2024

Cities are constantly evolving

Shaped by local factors that influence not only their physical form but also their social and cultural dynamics. But no matter the differences in geography or history, one challenge remains universal across Southeast Asia: limited space in urban environments.

Cities are constantly evolving — shaped by local factors that influence not only their physical form but also their social and cultural dynamics. But no matter the differences in geography or history, one challenge remains universal across Southeast Asia: limited space in urban environments.

Whether due to rising population density or growing economic activity, space in cities is becoming increasingly scarce.
This brings forth pressing questions about how we live, and more importantly, how we design better living environments within such constraints.

About the Talk

As part of the room x Living ASEAN Design Talk 2024 series, (Re)Thinking Inside the Box: Vol. 1 – Living in Small Urban Spaces dives into the realities, limitations, and creative possibilities of living in compact urban settings.

Sunday, August 4, 2024
1:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Room MR 214–216, 2nd Floor, BITEC Bangna

What to Expect

This edition explores how limitations can become drivers of innovation. Instead of only “thinking outside the box,” it encourages designers to rethink within the box — to look inward, reflect on constraints, and turn them into opportunities for sustainable, high-quality urban living.

What does a “small urban space” look like in major Southeast Asian cities?

How can design overcome spatial limitations and elevate the experience of living in compact environments?

The session focuses on urban housing and the quality of residential life in tight spaces — offering insights into how architecture and design can improve environmental wellbeing and day-to-day livability.

The talk will be conducted in English

Come be part of the conversation and explore new design strategies for the challenges — and opportunities — that define today’s cities.
